Coaching Information
The Quad City Hockey Association is affiliated with USA Hockey and follows their guidelines for selecting and training the coaches who will lead the youth hockey teams. USA Hockey requires that all coaches complete a training program to ensure that youth hockey players have a safe, fun and rewarding experience. The QCHA coaches are volunteers and bring a variety of hockey backgrounds to the ice.
Training
All new coaches attend an Initiation level course-Level 1. Level 1 coaches are allowed to coach at the Termite & Mite level.
Level 2, sometimes referred to as Associate, is required in order to coach Squirt teams. Level 2 clinics are a full day and include time on the ice to ensure the coaches know the basics of skating and puckhandiling. In additon to the classroom and on-ice training, each coach receives a full set of materials that explain all hockey skills and offer drills and teaching techniques.
Successful completion of Level 3 (Intermediate) is required to coach PeeWee and older teams. Level 3 Training ensures that coaches understand the basics of body contact that starts at the PeeWee level. A Level 3 coach must recertify every 3 years in order to keep their certification valid.
Level 4 requires coaches to attend a three day training session. Level 4 coaches are required for any team that plans on competing in the District Playoff Tournament that leads toward the National Championship.
For more information on when these certification clinics are offered, visit the USA Hockey website.
Safety
All QCHA coaches, managers and officials are required to sign a Consent to Be Screened form. Anyone who has routine acess to youth players must sign a form (consent to screen) indicating they consent to have a background check performed on an annual basis.
